3:00 PM - Eastport's historic Bank Square Building, now home to the Tides Institute and Art Museum, is swathed in scaffolding and plastic. Master mason Gerry Drake and his crew are restoring the building's one-hundred eighteen year old brick construction. Eastport for Pride and The Tides Institute will be hosting a public discussion with Drake on Tuesday, March 22nd, at 3 pm. Learn why old brick and mortar has to be restored using techniques that are different from those used with contemporary building materials. Pre-1900 historic brick buildings were built with materials not usually compatible with new, and when mixed together, can cause long-term problems in the bricks such as cracking and spalling. Gerry Drake Masonry has been involved with the historic restoration of brick buildings for twenty-eight years, recently working on many of downtown Bangor's historic brick buildings. Architect Kenneth Schiano will be on hand to discuss the building's historic restoration. Please meet at the Tides Institute Water Street steps.
