7:00 PM - “Ecosystem-Wide Approach to Fisheries Management” will be presented by Ted Ames, fisherman, researcher and recent recipient of a MacArthur Foundation “genius” grant, at the
Marine Environmental Research Institute (MERI) 55 Main Street in Blue Hill. Ames's presentation is the last of MERI’s 2005 Ocean Environment Lecture Series. A reception will be held at 6 PM.
A local fisherman of several decades, Ames has witnessed a number of disturbing changes in the region’s fisheries, including the depletion of ground fish, scallops, cod and herring due to over-fishing. Ames’ concern about the disappearing stocks led him to begin interviewing the region’s fishermen to see what could be done. With their help, Ames has been able to identify sensitive fish spawning areas that need to be protected to allow stocks to rebound, such as in eastern Gulf of Maine where haddock stocks have collapsed. Ames said that applying new scientific understanding to fisheries management practices and reducing the scale of the industry’s take are important parts of the solution.
This fall, Ames was one of 25 people in the nation to be awarded a $500,000 John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation “genius” grant for his efforts to protect essential fish habitats in the Gulf of Maine. He lives in Stonington with his wife Robin Alden, former commissioner of the Maine Department of Marine Resources.
Please join us to learn more about how Maine can save its fisheries, as well as one of its most economically and culturally important ways of life. Greg Williams - Outreach Coordinator -
