4:00 PM - INVITATION TO WASHINGTON COUNTY TIDAL ENERGY BRIEFING - MULTIPURPOSE ROOM, THE BOAT SCHOOL, 16 DEEP COVE ROAD, EASTPORT (call 853-2807 if you need directions) - As many of you know, for the past 15 months a team of highly-qualified technical consultants has been evaluating the potential for tidal energy development in five US states - including Maine - and two Canadian provinces. They have assessed both the most promising sites and the new technologies that are now available and - no surprise - the results are quite encouraging for our area.
The study team's work is nearly complete. You are invited to an informational briefing (at the time and date shown above) at which the findings of this research effort will be presented. Separate briefings are planned in New Brunswick and elsewhere. Please mark this event on your calendar and plan to attend.
Funding for this evaluation has been provided, in part, by the Maine Technology Institute, and a good portion of the research has focused on the tidal energy potential in Maine. Over 40 sites up and down the coast were reviewed. An area near Eastport has been identified as having the highest potential in the state for an initial demonstration project and subsequent commercial development. It is important to note that the new technologies under consideration do not have the dams and impoundments characteristic of earlier proposals. Lubec Narrows was also extremely attractive and has excellent potential, but as a proof-of-technology location it was constrained by the absence of enough water depth under the bridge to justify its selection over the Eastport site at this time.
The briefing will be presented by project director Roger Bedard of the Electric Power Research Institute in Palo Alto, Ca, and oceanographic consultant Dr. George Hagerman of Virginia Tech. Their presentation of findings will last about 45 minutes, followed by a question-and-answer session to provide both further clarification and an opportunity to discuss what needs to occur next. The completion of this research is a major step forward, but much remains to be known and done before success can be achieved.
The information presented will be interesting. We will get a clear picture of the unique quality of the tidal resource in our area, where the most attractive concentrations of tidal power are to be found, the design of a modern tidal energy generation system and its requirements, its annual power production and estimated costs, and an overview of environmental and regulatory issues.
This research may be the springboard for a valuable and exciting new dimension in the evolution of Washington County, an opportunity to gently use our natural gifts to increase energy independence and to point the way for other Maine coastal communities. The possibility of a new source of electricity that has no pollution, no fuel cost, no risk, and no dependence on foreign suppliers is indeed enticing and worthy of our consideration.
If you have questions, please call project advisor Bob Judd in North Lubec at 207-733-2016.

7:00 PM - The Penobscot Theatre of Bangor is bringing its current production of Almost, Maine to the Eastport Arts Center. This single performance will be an opportunity to see this widely heralded play, set in a small, mythical town in mid-winter northern Maine.
Playwright John Cariani was born and raised in Presque Isle. The play has had extremely successful runs both off-Broadway in New York, and at Portland Stage. Performed by four actors in multiple roles, "Residents of Almost, Maine are falling in and out of love at an alarming rate. The bruises heal, and the hearts mend in what's described as 'a charming mid-winter night's dream.'"
This is a rare opportunity to see a professional production in the new theatre of the Eastport Arts Center. The Center is at 36 Washington Street, a block north of Water Street. Tickets for the 7:00 p.m. performance on May 11 are $15; they can be reserved at Motel East, 853-4747. Contact: Jean Wilhelm, 853-9606.
